When someone goes on a journey... As we all know, music takes you around the whole world. But composers have also sometimes endured hardships and traveled long distances in order to study elsewhere, to gain new impressions, to present themselves - or even to become director of a conservatory on another continent: the great cello concerto is one of the most famous and most popular pieces from Antonín Dvořák's years in the USA, although this score also contains wistful memories of his Bohemian homeland. And the French master cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras was also born in America, more precisely in Montreal, Canada. Dvořák's sponsor and friend Johannes Brahms, a native of Hamburg and Viennese, wrote his Symphony No. 2 in the summer resort on Lake Wörthersee - and the way this magnificent work sounds, you can imagine a sunny day on vacation after a night of thunderstorms: That's how to live ! Especially when an orchestra as famous as the BBC Philharmonic accepts Julian Rachlin's invitation.
