Janoska Ensemble
& 100 Gypsy Violins
100 Gipsy Violins! A summit meeting of the Balkan and Roma genre is guaranteed when the Janoska Ensemble brings the legendary 100 Gipsy Violins to Eisenstadt, whose full, official name is ‘100 Tagú Cigányzenekar Országos Kulturális és Közművelődési Egyesület’. The idea for this unique orchestra with its special instrumentation (strings with clarinets and cymbals) was born in 1984, when the internationally celebrated Prímás King Sándor Járóka Sr (1922-1984) was to be buried in Budapest. The desire to turn this concentrated force of virtuosity and expression into an institution grew out of the joint music-making by the stars of the Romani music scene who had travelled from all over the world to honour the deceased. No sooner said than done: since then, the 100 Gipsy Violins and the Budapest Gipsy Symphony Orchestra have been delighting audiences with new interpretations of Balkan folk music and works by composers who drew on this very tradition - from Franz Liszt to Johann Strauss father and son, Johannes Brahms, Vittorio Monti and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, among many others.
