Sir Bryn Terfel, bassbariton

At his international breakthrough, in Richard Strauss' “Salome” at the 1992 Salzburg Festival, Sir Bryn Terfel had to resist the seductive powers of the title character as Jochanaan. But even in this role, the giant Welshman with his excitingly virile baritone proved his own irrepressible appeal. His global career has taken the singer to all the great opera houses and all the world's major stages: Whether as an interpreter of intimate songs by Franz Schubert or in some of the weightiest operatic roles of all, Sir Bryn Terfel has fascinated audiences and continues to do so to this day: including in Richard Wagner as Wotan in the “Ring des Nibelungen“, Hans Sachs in the “Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ or in the title role of the “Flying Dutchman“, but also as the fearsome Baron Scarpia in Puccini's “Tosca“. The fact that he sang a Kyrie in Welsh at the coronation of King Charles III in Westminster Abbey in May 2023 is part of the programme for him and his close-knit homeland. All Welsh people sing, they say. Sir Bryn Terfel proves that he is also at home in all styles with this programme, which provides a large cross-section of his fascinatingly broad repertoire from folk song to grand opera and does not exclude musicals.
